Dracaena sanderiana - My 'Lucky Bamboo'

My Lucky Bamboo

It's been more than 6 years (probably 2009) when I bought my first External Hard drive.
Thanks to my friend Vishwa, for giving me the address of a shop in Mysore (Raja Sales) who gave the best deals for Computer peripherals purchases during that time. Since there was no options of Online shopping or Item delivery to various remote areas of India(Bandipur National Park in this case), I took a free ride on the Company vehicle which went for Weekly purchase to Mysore.

I got 320GB External Hard Drive(the highest possible) along with some Blank CDs & DVDs at a good deal and was eager to return back quickly to try out the HDDrive. Just while exiting the shop, I found a shop opposite to Raja Sales having a lot of Decoration items. Though the items looked good, none of them had any life in them. I gave a quick round of the shop to see if I could find anything interesting and suddenly my eyes fell on a small set of Bamboos tied together and kept on water in a bowl. Upon enquiry, the shopkeeper told that those were "Lucky Bamboo" or "Fengshui/Water Bamboo" which can be kept indoors with very little sunlight requirement.

Since the set had some life in them and looked more real than any other items in that shop, I bought a set and thought of keeping it in the Reception Desk of my Company. A few weeks passed and I found the set sulking a bit. So I moved the bowl to my room, changed the water and kept a close eye for the next few days. The Bamboo thrived better and within a short period (2010) I got transferred to another Unit of the same Company (Kabini) 120 Kms away. It was a very sad moment parting from my colleagues and I packed everything that would keep the memories alive (including the Bamboo set).

Once again, I found the set sulking while it lay in the ledge of my window with very little sunlight. A few Bamboo sticks even got spoiled completely and the rest didn't seem promising either. I quickly removed the spoiled ones, changed the water and placed the few good ones back in the bowl. A few days later, the water in the bowl became turbid again and it seemed that the remaining ones will not thrive either. About five sticks remained out of fifteen which I eventually planted in a mud pot.

By the end of 2011, I got a new job offer to join another company and had to part with a lot of potted plants and colleagues once again. I used to call up my ex-teammates and ask them about the plants in the beginning but forgot about the same after two years.

My luck bought me back to Kabini again in 2014, and to my astonishment, found all the plants in good health because of the care taken by my colleagues. The bamboos had grown in height and the other plants also had become big and bushy. I spent the next 15 months nurturing the plants and adding more to the variety.

August-2015, again, got a chance to change my job profile and shift to a Company very next to the one I was working at. After a month of working, I decided to shift a few pots including the Water Bamboo to a fish pond in my present Company. Little more than a year had passed and suddenly last week I found the "Lucky Bamboo - Dracaena sanderiana" flowering.

The feeling of seeing this complete cycle from a set of leafy twigs to a flowering plant was great and couldn't help writing it down to cherish the memories in near future....

Almost forgot to keep updated that the External Hard Disk is still working fine...
